The ACC began as a simple personal initiative hosted annually during the founder's birthday to give back to nature and community. What started as an intimate moment of connection and camaraderie gradually evolved into a growing collective of young people coming together to connect, share stories, and creatively engage in environmental action.
Through these experiences, a recurring pattern started to emerge: young people are deeply interested in conversation yet the way sustainability is often communicated feels technical, distant and at times inaccessible.
In many ways, sustainability has been framed as something external or elite yet it is inherently embedded within our everyday African lifestyles. Many of us engage in sustainable practices daily without naming them as such. Whether it's using public transport, repurposing household containers, or sourcing food from our local mama mboga we have already been intuitively engaging in local sustainable systems.
The ACC was born from the need to bridge this gap by reminding people they are already part of the solution. We do this through co-creation and participatory approaches, engaging in mindful practices, exploring context-relevant solutions, and collectively reimagine what sustainable living looks like. This approach not only makes sustainability more accessible, but also helps to ease climate anxiety, foster agency, and cultivate a sense of shared responsibility and possibility.
